Mogilno hospital fined €2.6 million over overbilling by Spine neuro‑surgery firm

The county hospital in Mogilno (Kujawsko‑Pomorskie) and, similarly, a hospital in Miastko were found to have massively over‑billed the National Health Fund (NFZ) through a contract with the private neuro‑surgery company Spine. Doctors performed brief (3‑10 minute) procedures but documented them as complex, hospital‑based operations, allowing them to claim the higher NFZ reimbursement. This scheme let the surgeons earn up to 26 000 zł per hour – more than 300 000 zł per day – while the hospitals received only about 35 % of the payment. An NFZ audit imposed a fine of more than 2.6 million zł on the Mogilno hospital and identified potential penalties of up to 13 million zł for the Miastko facility. The case has been referred to the prosecutor’s office and the Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA). Political fallout followed: Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek asked the national prosecutor for clarification, and government spokesperson Adam Szłapka described the situation as “absolutely shocking”. The fines have left the Mogilno hospital unable to pay staff salaries, sparking a financial crisis for the institution. Investigations remain ongoing.
