Mogilno Hospital fraud probe uncovers multi‑million złotys overcharged neuro‑surgery contracts

Polish prosecutors have been investigating the County Hospital in Mogilno since late 2024 after a whistle‑blower report triggered an audit. The audit found that the hospital’s former management concluded a contract with an external firm that performed minimally invasive spine procedures. Under the agreement the firm received 65 % of the National Health Fund (NFZ) reimbursement while the hospital kept only 35 %, despite the hospital providing only the premises and staff. Prosecutors say the hospital billed these short ambulatory procedures as costly inpatient surgeries, leading the NFZ to pay substantially higher refunds. The NFZ has imposed a penalty of more than 2.6 million zł and the hospital is appealing the decision.

National prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk highlighted the scale, stating: “Zabiegi, które powinny być wykonywane w ciągu 30 minut, były realizowane w liczbie 70‑80 dziennie.” He added that between 2023‑2024 roughly 2 500 such procedures were performed, far exceeding the national average. The investigation is awaiting expert opinions on hospital management and NFZ settlement practices.

The case has drawn criticism from medical bodies and prompted broader NFZ checks of similar arrangements in other regional hospitals.
