Polish Icons Maria Konopnicka and Maria Tarnowska Honored

In October 1910, poet Maria Konopnicka died in a Lviv sanatorium and was buried at the Lychakiv Cemetery. Her funeral drew thousands, turning into a large patriotic demonstration that was reported across Galician Polish press. Vice‑president of Lviv Tadeusz Rutowski praised her artistic mastery during the ceremony.

Countess Maria Tarnowska, a Polish resistance figure of World War II, fought the German occupiers, rescued civilians during the Warsaw Uprising, endured imprisonment, and was later persecuted by the post‑war communist regime. She is remembered for saving thousands of Poles and for her later marginalisation in historical narratives.
