Polish inspection uncovers fish substitution and mislabeling in Baltic fry shops

Polish food safety officials inspected 50 seasonal fish‑fried venues along the Baltic coast. In 38 establishments (76 % of those checked) inspectors found significant violations.

Laboratory tests revealed species substitution in eight batches, such as selling sol as limanda yellow‑fin or replacing Atlantic cod and Argentine hake with cheaper black‑cod. Labeling problems affected 79 of 118 examined portions, with missing allergen information, incomplete ingredient lists, misleading fish names and absent details on preparation methods or net weight. Prices also drew attention, exemplified by a bill of 230 zł for two cod portions reported by influencers.

The inspections led to sanctions under existing regulations for the businesses involved.
