Polish Lotto winner secures 15.3 million zł, tax on winnings clarified

A resident of Nowy Sącz won the Polish Lotto draw on 25 July, receiving a prize of 15 324 508,40 zł after correctly selecting the six winning numbers. The win ranks among the highest in the country’s Lotto history, though it does not surpass the record set in the Piotrków county.

Polish tax law treats lottery and gambling prizes as taxable income at a rate of 10 % of the prize value. The tax may be withheld by the organizing entity, relieving the winner of filing a separate declaration. Exemptions apply for smaller prizes: cash winnings up to 2 280 zł in lotteries, promotional contests up to 2 000 zł, and certain low‑value prizes under 760 zł, provided the competition is open to the public. Legal casino winnings are exempt when the casino holds a proper licence.
