Polish Mining Authority addresses methane reporting gaps
The Polish Mining Authority (WUG) has addressed discrepancies in methane emission reports from mining operations and degasification systems for 2024. Following an analysis by Greenpeace Poland and the Frank Bold Foundation, which identified shortcomings in reporting by mining companies, operators, and the government, the WUG attributed some of these gaps to the initial implementation phase of EU regulations.
Under EU Regulation 2024/1787, which aims to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector, there are strict requirements for methane capture and efficiency. A significant challenge identified is the current lack of accredited independent verifiers in Poland. This shortage is due to the fact that the necessary technical standards, which are the responsibility of the European Commission, have not yet been finalized, making full compliance with verification requirements difficult at this stage.
