Polish mining wages see sharp June increase due to annual bonuses

Recent data from Statistics Poland (GUS) regarding Polish wages has drawn significant attention due to a sharp month-to-month increase in the mining and quarrying sector. In June, average gross wages in this sector rose by over 50 percent compared to May, reaching 17,400 PLN.

Experts clarify that this spike is not a sign of permanent wage acceleration but a “classic statistical effect” caused by annual bonus payments in coal and copper mining companies. Mariusz Zielonka, chief economist of the Lewiatan Confederation, noted that the figures reflect periodic payouts rather than a sustained trend.

On a broader scale, data for the second quarter shows an average gross wage of 9,233 PLN, representing a 5.5 percent year-on-year increase. While some political figures have used these rising figures to highlight economic growth, industry experts warn that the high volatility of periodic payments in specific sectors can lead to misleading interpretations of the data.
