Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment threatens up to 700,000 PLN penalties for municipalities missing recycling go

Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment has warned that municipalities that fail to reach the 55 % recycling target for 2025 could face fines of up to 700,000 zł for each missing percentage point. In the Lubusz Voivodeship, only 23 of 82 gminas met the requirement, with the best performer Maszewo reaching 66.95 % and the lowest‑scoring Trzciel at just 11.42 %.

Regional marshals submitted waste‑management reports to the ministry, highlighting that the Podlaskie region achieved the highest national rate at 69.04 %. Experts note that differences stem from both waste volumes and the organization of collection systems, and that enforcement actions may take years, with municipalities able to file corrective reports.

Failure to comply could result in substantial financial penalties, potentially delaying local budgets and prompting corrective programmes to avoid or defer payments.
