Polish motorists warned speed limits may stay after an intersection

Polish drivers frequently assume that a speed‑limit sign (B‑33) is automatically cancelled when they pass an intersection, but the road code does not support this. The sign remains in force until it is explicitly altered or terminated by a subsequent sign, such as a B‑44 indicating the end of a limited‑speed zone. This rule applies especially on highways and two‑lane rapid roads, where an intersection on the opposite lane does not affect the limit for the lane a driver is travelling in.

The Warsaw police have confirmed that after crossing an intersection without a repeated or modified sign, motorists must continue to obey the prevailing speed limit. Failure to do so can lead to unintentional speeding violations, particularly in work zones or hazardous areas where the original B‑33 sign was installed.

Drivers are advised to look for a repeat of the speed‑limit sign or a specific cancellation sign before assuming the limit no longer applies.
