Polish MP Wojciech Król Faces Bid to Strip Parliamentary Immunity

European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi has asked the Polish Sejm to lift the parliamentary immunity of Civic Coalition MP Wojciech Król, alleging he received a 1.4 million‑złoty benefit linked to an EU grant for the Stara Huta project. Kövesi submitted the request directly to the Sejm’s Committee on Rules of Procedure, Parliamentary Affairs and Immunities, but the committee rejected her proposal to postpone the debate, insisting the discussion will take place at the scheduled time. The prosecutor cited confidentiality and EU law as reasons for not disclosing the full details of the request, prompting several MPs to question the legality of the EU office’s filing. The final decision on whether to strip Król’s immunity will be taken by the full Sejm.
