Polish MS Therapy Shortage and Romanian Brain Health Initiative Spotlight Neurology Issues
Prof. Alina Kułakowska explained that Poland has about 50,000 people with multiple sclerosis, of whom roughly 5,000 have primary progressive MS (PPMS). While over 20 disease‑modifying drugs are available for relapsing‑remitting MS, only one effective medication is approved for PPMS and access to it is limited by systemic restrictions, leaving a significant unmet medical need.
Prof. Halina Sienkiewicz‑Jarosz highlighted the growing burden of neurological disorders, noting that around 6 million Poles are affected annually and that an aging population will increase demand for care. Marking World Brain Day, she emphasized prevention through control of blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, healthy diet, exercise, sleep, and avoidance of tobacco and excess alcohol, as well as intellectual and social activity to build cognitive reserve. While many neurodegenerative diseases lack preventive cures, lifestyle measures can reduce risk of dementia by up to 45 %.
