Poland environmental updates: Toxic waste cleanup and odor mitigation efforts

The municipality of Rozdrażew has signed a contract worth over 5.2 million PLN to remove 750 tons of hazardous chemicals. The waste, discovered in 2018 on private property, includes flammable, toxic, and carcinogenic substances such as hydrochloric acid and used engine oils. The project is funded by a 5.8 million PLN grant from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. A consortium led by Hydrogeotechnika Sp. z o. o. won the tender to manage the cleanup.

In Zabrze, local authorities are addressing long-standing odor issues affecting residents and the neighboring city of Ruda Śląska. Mayor Kamil Żbikowski announced that the problem is expected to be mitigated by mid-2028. Efforts include hermeticization measures at Fortum and FCC facilities, with completion targets set for late 2027 and mid-2028, respectively. Additionally, the municipal landfill managed by MOSiR is scheduled to cease operations by the end of this year.
