Polish officials advise safe conduct during wolf and fox sightings

The State Forest Service in Gdańsk reminds residents of Kościerski County that wolves appearing near settlements are not an immediate danger but require calm, measured behaviour. People should stay at a distance, avoid approaching or photographing the animal, refrain from feeding it, and slowly retreat toward buildings or a larger group of people. If the wolf does not leave, raising hands, speaking loudly and making noise can encourage it to move away. Unusual wolf behaviour, such as repeated closeness to homes, should be reported to authorities.

In Świnoujście, officials issue similar advice for fox encounters. Citizens are urged to stay calm, keep their distance, and never try to feed the animal. Securing garbage, sealing waste containers and removing food leftovers reduce attraction. Dog owners should keep pets on leashes to prevent chases. If a fox shows abnormal behaviour that could indicate illness, it should be reported to the County Veterinary Doctor. Both wolves and foxes are protected species, and responsible human actions help prevent habituation and protect public safety.
