Poland's Sejm rejects no-confidence motion for Finance Minister Andrzej Domański
The Polish Sejm has rejected a no-confidence motion filed by the Law and Justice (PiS) party against Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański. The vote saw 234 deputies oppose the dismissal, while 204 voted in favor, falling short of the 231 votes required for an absolute majority to remove the minister.
Opposition lawmakers criticized Domański for rising public debt and significant budget deficits, with some alleging that the combined deficit for 2024–2027 could exceed 1 trillion PLN, leading to an estimated public debt of nearly 1.4 trillion PLN. In response, the government defended the fiscal position, citing high defense spending—which accounts for nearly 5 percent of GDP and approximately 7 percent when including related costs—and the need to repay debts inherited from previous administrations.
Following the vote, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced he has signed a request to President Karol Nawrocki to appoint Domański as Deputy Prime Minister. While the move is seen by political analysts as a show of confidence in the face of opposition pressure, it has also sparked concerns regarding a potential constitutional dispute if the President refuses the nomination.
