Polish parents prioritize children's happiness over grades, note corporal punishment ban
A survey commissioned by Erste Bank Polska of 1,096 adults, including 322 parents, shows that Polish parents now define their children's success mainly by happiness, health, resilience, self‑confidence and financial independence rather than academic grades or career prospects. The study highlights that 55 % of respondents cite self‑belief and emotional coping as the most important competencies, while financial education tools such as child accounts are also valued.
Poland has prohibited physical punishment of children since 2010 under article 96 of the Family Code. Experts stress that violence does not teach respect and is linked to higher risks of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and suicidal behaviour. Child‑rights organisations continue to advocate for broader awareness of the ban and its importance for child wellbeing.
