Polish Pathologist Kamil Sokół Fired After Toilet Autopsy Controversy

In August, an autopsy was performed on a patient who died in a toilet at Warsaw’s South Hospital. Recordings released by journalists captured the procedure, showing pathologist Kamil Sokół and prosectorium coordinator Artur Habowski discussing the case, with remarks describing the work as “a bit of mess.”

After a parliamentary inquiry by MP Janusz Cieszyński, the National Institute of Oncology terminated Sokół’s civil‑law contract, which had been scheduled to run from January 2026 to January 2027, ending his employment on 15 July. The institute said the decision was its own assessment, while emphasizing continued monitoring of the matter amid public outcry.
