Polish People's Party (PSL) advocates for ending term limits in local government

The Polish People's Party (PSL) is formally campaigning to repeal the law that limits mayors, municipal heads, and city presidents to a maximum of two terms. The PSL Supreme Council passed an official resolution on this matter, signaling a push to mobilize their parliamentary club.

Michał Skotnicki, the deputy voivode of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, stated that if the two-term limit for local government is not abolished, the party will propose introducing similar term limits for members of parliament to ensure legal consistency.

The current legislation, introduced in 2018 by the Law and Justice (PiS) government, was intended to increase rotation in local executive offices and prevent the formation of local political cliques. However, opponents argue the law is unconstitutional as it violates citizens' passive voting rights and the freedom of local structures to choose their leaders.

A legislative project to abolish these limits was submitted to the Sejm in mid-2025 but is currently stalled in the Extraordinary Committee for Changes in Codifications.
