Polish PiS seeks EU Parliament amendment to label UPA as Nazi‑linked

Polish ruling party PiS has tabled an amendment to the European Parliament’s report on Ukraine, calling the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) a “organization of Nazi character” responsible for mass murders of Polish and Jewish civilians. The amendment, presented by MEP Michał Dworczyk, urges the EU to state that glorifying UPA “conflicts with European values.”

The move follows President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to name a special‑forces unit “Heroes of UPA,” which sparked criticism in Poland. Alongside PiS’s proposal, the European People’s Party submitted a softer amendment expressing regret, while the European Conservatives and Reformists group offered a harsher version. The European Parliament will vote on the report and the amendments during its July session in Strasbourg; the outcome remains uncertain.

“The European Parliament recognises UPA as an organization of Nazi character… whose glorification cannot be reconciled with European values,” the PiS text reads. The amendment is intended to remind EU partners of Poland’s historical sensitivities and to push for de‑escalation and reconciliation between Poland and Ukraine.
