Polish political party challenges deputy minister over election postponement comments

The Konfederacja Korony Polskiej (KKP) party has responded to comments made by Deputy Minister of Sport and Tourism, Ireneusz Raś, regarding the possibility of postponing elections in the event of war. Raś suggested during a radio interview that elections might not take place in a wartime scenario, though he clarified he does not believe Poland is currently in such a position.

In response, the KKP demanded guarantees from the government that Poland will not be directly drawn into the war in Ukraine. The party emphasized that free elections are a fundamental right of the nation and essential for democratic control over power.

Under Article 228, paragraph 7 of the Polish Constitution, elections for the Sejm, Senate, local government, and presidency are suspended during a state of emergency and for 90 days after its conclusion. However, the ongoing war in Ukraine or increased regional tensions do not automatically trigger this mechanism; a formal state of emergency must be officially introduced by the President upon the request of the Council of Ministers.
