Polish Prosecutor Drops Smolensk Diplomatic‑Betrayal Investigation

On 5 August 2026 the National Prosecutor’s Office (Prokuratura Krajowa) announced it had partially dismissed the long‑running probe into alleged “diplomatic betrayal” linked to Poland’s cooperation with Russia over the 2010 Smolensk air‑crash investigation. The case, opened in 2016, examined whether senior Polish officials – including former Prime Minister Donald Tusk and former Sejm Marshal Bronisław Komorowski – had concluded agreements with Russian authorities that harmed Polish interests. Prosecutors concluded that no such agreements existed and that the actions of the officials did not meet the legal definition of diplomatic betrayal.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski reacted sharply, describing the alleged perpetrators as liars who “will burn in hell” and emphasizing that the prosecutor’s decision confirmed there was no diplomatic betrayal. He also referenced a prior civil‑law victory against Jarosław Kaczyński, noting the broader political context of the controversy.
