Polish prosecutor withdraws charges against councilman over Shrek meme

The Radomsko District Prosecutor's Office has withdrawn indictment charges against PSL councilman Wojciech Ślusarczyk. The case originated from a social media post made in August 2025, which featured a modified image of First Lady Marta Nawrocka depicted as a princess from the film ‘Shrek’, accompanied by the caption, “And where is Shrek?”.

Following the publication, Ślusarczyk faced charges of insulting the President and the First Lady, which carried a potential sentence of up to three years in prison. However, during a hearing at the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski, the court rejected the prosecution's request to return the case files for the purpose of gathering additional evidence.

District Prosecutor Dorota Bzowska stated that after an internal review, she determined that continuing the prosecution was no longer purposeful due to errors in evaluating the evidence and an improper interpretation of linguistic opinions. The presidential couple now has two weeks to decide whether they wish to act as auxiliary prosecutors to continue the proceedings.
