Polish prosecutors close Smoleńsk diplomatic treason investigation

The Polish prosecutor's office has discontinued a ten-year investigation into allegations of "diplomatic treason" regarding the 2010 Smoleńsk air disaster. The investigation focused on whether cooperation with Russian authorities during the accident probe constituted a crime against the state.

According to reports, the prosecution concluded that the Polish government's actions did not harm the interests of the Republic of Poland and that the chosen method of cooperation was the most beneficial for the country. Investigators determined the crash was an accident caused by poor weather and time pressure during an attempt to land amidst dense fog.

The Law and Justice (PiS) party, led by Jarosław Kaczyński, had previously accused Donald Tusk's government of covering up a deliberate Russian attack. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski responded to the decision by stating, "There was no diplomatic treason, nor any intention to commit it," while criticizing those who spread misinformation about the event.

Despite the dismissal of the case, analysts suggest the decision may not calm political tensions, as PiS has historically maintained its theory of a conspiracy without providing conclusive evidence.
