Polish railway sector records passenger surge in 2025

In 2025 the Polish rail market carried a record 439 million passengers, while freight transport fell to 217.8 million tonnes, the lowest level since the early 2000s. The annual report of the Urząd Transportu Kolejowego (UTK) shows that Kraków Główny became the busiest station with 30.76 million boardings, followed by Poznań Główny (29.37 million) and Wrocław Główny (28.37 million). Warsaw Central and Gdańsk Główny rounded out the top five.

The analysis also highlights the concentration of passenger traffic in three voivodeships—Mazowieckie, Pomorskie and Wielkopolska—which together generate almost 55 % of all passenger exchanges. Wielkopolska alone hosts 39 stations with more than 1,000 daily passenger exchanges, underscoring its strategic role in the national rail network. The UTK report links the growth to sustained infrastructure investment, shorter travel times, improved service comfort and a broader push for low‑emission mobility.
