Polish reading initiatives promote literacy among children

Various reading initiatives across Poland have concluded or are ongoing, aimed at fostering literacy and engagement with books among children.

The national initiative ‘Dzieci z Bullerbyn to MY!’ (The Children of Bullerbyn are US!) recently completed its second edition. Organized by the Public Library in Warsaw's Białołęka district, the program involved over 60 institutions nationwide, including schools, libraries, and cultural centers, alongside a partner association from Sweden. Inspired by Astrid Lindgren’s literature, the campaign featured workshops, field games, and a traveling ‘Chest of Sages’ that collects treasures from children across different regions.

In Bydgoszcz, the Pedagogical Provincial Library hosted sessions as part of the Children's Academy of Fairy Tale Reading. In collaboration with the ABC XXI Foundation, these activities introduced preschoolers and primary students to the role of librarians and various book formats, such as pop-up books and augmented reality publications. The program emphasizes the importance of reading aloud and supports the broader ‘Whole Poland Reads to Children’ campaign.
