Polish researchers announce breakthroughs in cancer research and targeted therapies
Polish researchers have reported significant advancements in cancer-related studies, focusing on both preventative mechanisms and targeted treatment methods.
A team from Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum, led by Professor Marcin Magierowski, published findings in ‘Gastroenterology’ regarding the mechanisms of Barrett’s esophagus. The study suggests that the loss of hydrogen sulfide signaling plays a critical role in the cellular reprogramming that leads to this precancerous condition. The researchers also identified a previously unknown method of prostaglandin E2 accumulation, which could serve as a target for future pharmacological therapies to prevent esophageal cancer.
Separately, scientists at the University of Wrocław, led by Professor Łukasz Opaliński, have developed a new approach to targeted cancer therapies. Published in the ‘Journal of American Chemical Society’, the research demonstrates that instead of solely searching for unique antigens, it is possible to control the drug absorption mechanism by managing it from both outside and inside the cell. This method involves using precisely selected inhibitors alongside antigen-recognizing molecules to direct oncological therapy toward molecular targets.
