Polish retailers shut stores in Gniezno and Wyszków as chain optimization continues

The Biedronka discount supermarket on Witkowska Street in Gniezno closed abruptly without an official explanation, marking the first closure of a Biedronka outlet in the city. Residents noted the empty premises and the lack of any public notice, and the future use of the premises remains unknown.

In Wyszków, two Delikatesy Centrum stores on Prosta and Centralna streets were shut down on 1 July, with about 30 employees receiving termination notices a day earlier. The closures are part of Eurocash Group’s broader strategy to streamline its retail network, which plans to eliminate dozens of unprofitable locations and convert many stores to a franchise model.

Both incidents illustrate ongoing restructuring in Poland’s retail sector, affecting local shoppers and workers while reflecting wider efforts by large chains to improve profitability.
