Polish retailers withdraw Halloween items following school violence
Major retail chains in Poland, including Biedronka, Carrefour, Action, and SMYK, have decided to withdraw certain Halloween products from their shelves. The items being removed include masks depicting blood, horror-themed costumes, and plastic or rubber imitations of dangerous weapons such as knives, axes, and cleavers.
This decision follows a series of violent incidents in Polish schools involving sharp objects. Recent events include a stabbing in Ostrołęka where nine people were injured, and an attack in Leszczydół-Nowiny where a 15-year-old student killed a school caretaker.
Retailers stated the move is a response to social context and parental concerns. Małgorzata Polakowska of Biedronka noted the goal is to ensure seasonal offerings promote positive emotions and shared fun, while SMYK emphasized social responsibility in catering to parents and children.
