Poland implements new school nutrition rules featuring legumes

New dietary regulations implemented in Polish schools and kindergartens on September 1 aim to promote a 'planetary diet.' The Ministry of Health's guidelines mandate at least one meatless meal based on legumes per week, while limiting meat, sugar, and salt consumption to combat rising childhood obesity rates.

Public reaction is deeply divided. While some studies suggest 66% of Poles support the inclusion of legumes, local data from Otwock indicates significant resistance among students, with 71% of surveyed children reportedly returning uneaten legume-based meals. Parents have expressed concerns regarding potential hunger, picky eating, and increased costs associated with new healthy vending machine options.

Additionally, the policy has become a subject of intense online debate. NASK analysts report that disinformation regarding a 'forced veganism' or a 'ban on meat' has reached millions of views on social media platforms, often framing the health initiative as a political or climate-driven attack on agriculture.
