Polish scientists develop light-based biomass conversion technology
Scientists at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences are developing a technology to convert biomass into high-value organic compounds using light and electrochemical processes. The project focuses on a photoelectrochemical approach, similar to photovoltaic systems, to transform waste products such as paper pulp and seafood shells into substances useful for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
By utilizing light, such as solar energy, to excite a photosensitive electrode, the researchers aim to facilitate chemical reactions under milder conditions while reducing overall electricity consumption. The ultimate goal is to create a process that produces both organic compounds and electricity, providing sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based raw materials.
