Polish scientists highlighted in historical Nobel Prize medical nominations

Dr. Renata Paliga, a science historian from the Institute of History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has identified four key Polish figures nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology between 1901 and 1976.

The highlighted scientists include Rudolf Weigl, who received a record 75 nominations for his development of the first effective vaccine against typhus; Ludwik Hirszfeld, recognized for his pioneering work on blood groups; Kazimierz Funk, who introduced the concept of vitamins; and Napoleon Cybulski, whose discovery of adrenaline significantly impacted medical sciences.

Because the Nobel Committee only reveals nominations after 50 years, these historical contributions are being re-examined through the lens of their long-term impact on global health and nutrition.
