Polish Seed Agency to launch seed certification system as GUS conducts nationwide farm survey

The German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) issued a ruling that could require German buyers to demand proof of legal origin for seed material supplied from Poland. In response, the Polish Seed Agency (Agencja Nasienna) is developing a certification system for the legal origin of plant material, slated to start in January 2027. Agency president Dr inż. Michał Rokicki noted that the decision “confirms that plant‑variety rights can extend to harvested material such as seed, fruit or vegetables.”

Separately, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) is completing its Integrated Statistics on Agricultural Holdings (R‑SGR) survey. Randomly selected Polish farmers must provide data on land use, crop production, livestock, equipment and employment by 14 August. GUS director Marta Wojciechowska emphasized that “participation is essential for shaping agricultural policy, subsidies and rural development.” Both initiatives aim to improve transparency and data quality in Poland’s agricultural sector.

The developments affect Polish seed exporters, domestic farmers and may influence trade with Germany, while the GUS survey will inform national agricultural programmes.
