Polish Sejm approves 'lex szarlatan' law to curb pseudomedical practices

The Polish Sejm passed a new amendment to the Patient Rights Act, dubbed "lex szarlatan," aimed at eliminating pseudomedical services that threaten health. The law grants the Patient Rights Ombudsman new powers to issue public warnings, impose temporary injunctions, and participate in civil proceedings, enabling rapid action against harmful practices.

Violators face steep financial penalties of up to 1 million złoty for breaching collective patient rights and up to 100 000 złoty for obstructing the Ombudsman. The legislation also clarifies the distinction between legitimate herbal therapy and dangerous quackery, reinforcing consumer protection in the health sector.
