Polish Sejm passes social security subsidies for artists

The Polish Sejm has passed a law aimed at providing state subsidies for social and health insurance contributions for artists with low or irregular incomes. The legislation, prepared by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, seeks to help professionals such as actors, musicians, dancers, architects, and folk artists maintain continuous insurance coverage despite fluctuating earnings.

Approximately 21,000 individuals may qualify for this support, provided they meet specific income criteria. Specifically, average monthly income over the last three years must not exceed 125 percent of the minimum wage. The program is expected to cost approximately 375 million PLN in its first full year of operation, projected for 2027.

The vote passed with 232 in favor, 197 against, and four abstentions. While supporters argue the measure secures the retirement future of those working on irregular contracts, opposition members have criticized the law, questioning the fairness of providing specific financial mechanisms to one professional group using public funds.
