Polish Senate receives petition for new Great-grandmother and Great-grandfather Days

A petition has been submitted to the Polish Senate proposing the establishment of Great-grandmother Day and Great-grandfather Day. The initiators suggest that these new observances take place in September to honor the oldest generation of families.

The authors emphasize that the goal is not to create a commercial holiday involving expensive gifts, but rather to encourage symbolic gestures such as phone calls, visits, family tea, or sharing family histories with younger generations. The petition seeks to ensure that the oldest family members feel seen and appreciated.

The initiative has received support from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and the Halina Szwarc Third Age University in Warsaw. However, legal questions remain regarding how the Senate would implement such days, as existing traditions like Grandmother's Day and Grandfather's Day are informal and not recognized as official state holidays in any legal act.
