Polish Senate Rejects EU Climate Policy Referendum, Solidarity Chief Decries Decision

The Senate of the Republic of Poland voted against a proposal to hold a nationwide referendum on the European Union's climate policy. The motion was defeated with 32 senators voting in favour, 62 against and one abstention, falling short of the 48‑vote absolute majority required.

President Karol Nawrocki had brought the request forward, citing a pledge made during his campaign to let citizens weigh the impact of the EU’s Green Deal on living costs, energy prices and business and agricultural activity. The referendum question was to ask whether voters support a climate policy that has led to higher costs.

Solidarity trade‑union leader Piotr Duda sharply criticised the Senate’s choice, posting on X: “You had a choice between disgrace and war with Brussels. You chose disgrace, and war will come anyway.” The comment underscored the tension between Polish political factions over EU climate initiatives.
