Polish State Railways marks 100th anniversary
Polish State Railways (PKP) celebrated its centenary under the slogan “Connecting people, places and histories.” The commemoration highlighted the railway’s role as a strategic sector of the national economy and a cultural heritage. It referenced the first passenger train run in 1825 in England and the 1918 restoration of Poland’s rail network after independence, when three distinct systems inherited from former occupiers were unified into a single organization. The anniversary underscored the ongoing importance of rail transport for regional connectivity and economic development in Poland.
The celebration was organized alongside previous events marking 200 years of railways worldwide, emphasizing both historical achievements and future modernization plans for the PKP network.
