Polish strawberry market sees rapid sell‑through as demand soars, experts cue best varieties

At the wholesale market in Bronisz, Poland, both domestic and imported strawberries are disappearing within minutes of arrival. Market expert Maciej Kmera notes that each delivery is sold almost instantly, creating two daily peaks – early‑morning sales of the previous day's fruit and an early‑afternoon rush of freshly picked berries. Prices for Greek imports have fallen from 25‑35 zł/kg to 14‑15 zł/kg with the spring supply, while Serbian strawberries, larger and brighter, have just entered the market.

The speed of trade is driven by strong consumer demand and the perishable nature of the fruit. Weather conditions are critical: a few warmer days can boost Polish harvests and alter prices quickly. Meanwhile, growers are struggling to find labor for harvesting.

Kmera also advises retailers and processors on cultivar choice. Dessert‑type varieties such as the Italian “Asia,” Elsanta, Honeoye and Polka‑czy‑Florence are praised for sweetness and texture, suitable for fresh consumption. For processing, the long‑standing Polish workhorse Senga Sengana is highlighted for its dark flesh and high sugar content, along with Polka and Dukat, which hold up well in jams and frozen products. Freshness remains key – the best strawberries reach market within hours of picking.
