Polish sugar and cocoa prices plunge to record lows amid retail price wars
Polish sugar has fallen to a record low of 99 groszy per kilogram. Producers of sugar beet warn that the price is the result of an aggressive price war among retail chains and increased imports from outside the EU, which they describe as “dumping”. Jan Zubrzycki, vice‑president of the Sugar Beet Growers Association, said the situation is “incredible” and that such prices threaten the viability of sugar beet production.
At the same time, global cocoa prices have dropped by more than half from their 2024 peaks, but chocolate prices in Polish stores remain high, typically 7–10 zł for regular products. Experts explain that lower raw‑material costs are offset by higher energy, gas, transport, packaging and labour expenses, and that manufacturers often purchase cocoa months in advance, delaying any price benefit to consumers.
