Accused femicides die in Argentina and Paraguay
Two separate incidents involving men accused of femicide have resulted in their deaths.
In Salta, Argentina, José Eduardo Figueroa, who was serving a life sentence for the August 2023 murder of his wife, Mercedes Jiménez Kvedaras, was found dead in the Villa Las Rosas prison. Preliminary autopsy results indicate the cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging, supporting the hypothesis of suicide. Authorities are investigating whether there was any negligence or responsibility regarding prison protocols.
In a separate case, Jan Lu Korzeniecki, a Polish national wanted by Argentine authorities for the July murder of Luciana Daniela Ojeda in Córdoba, was found dead in a hotel in Filadelfia, Paraguay. Korzeniecki had been a fugitive following the death of Ojeda, which an autopsy attributed to cardiogenic shock caused by a blow to the chest. While Interpol confirmed his identity through a death certificate, Paraguayan authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances of his death to determine if it was a suicide or a homicide.
