Polish teachers rally and education ministry's Plan B after presidential veto

The Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP) will hold a protest on 31 August in front of the Prime Minister’s office in Warsaw. The national trade‑union federation OPZZ has urged its member organisations to join, demanding dignified wages for teachers and other public‑sector workers and calling for a 15 % pay rise in the public‑finance sector by 2027.

At the same time, the Ministry of Education, led by Minister Barbara Nowacka, announced a “Plan B” to create a national student ombudsman and regional representatives despite President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of the related legislation. The plan is slated to start by 1 September, but teachers and school directors remain skeptical, arguing that existing bodies already handle student‑rights issues and that the new office would have limited powers.
