Poland marks World Blood Donor Day with ceremonies and donor appeals
June 14 is observed worldwide as World Blood Donor Day, honoring voluntary, unpaid blood donors. In Poland, local events highlighted the day. In Kutno, a ceremony at the Senior Centre honored honorary donors and volunteers; the preceding collection on June 12, under the slogan “Kropla Pokoleń”, attracted 39 participants, 34 of whom donated, yielding more than 15 liters of blood. Officials from the municipality presented awards and thanked donors for helping patients throughout the year.
In Wąbrzeźno, the County office hosted a meeting with the Polish Red Cross delegation, awarding gifts to donors and urging continued support. National health authorities stressed the annual challenge of blood shortages that intensify during the summer vacation period, when demand rises and supply often falls short. Data from 2025 show over 650 000 Poles donated blood, resulting in roughly 1.6 million donations; a single 450 ml donation can save up to three lives. Authorities continue to promote regular donations, especially of rare groups such as O RhD‑, and highlight benefits for donors, including paid leave, special recognitions, and other privileges.
The World Health Organization established the day to raise awareness of the constant need for safe blood and to encourage governments to ensure adequate supplies.
