Polish TV series “Daleko od szosy” celebrates enduring legacy

The classic Polish television drama “Daleko od szosy” originated from a seven‑page school essay about a bus driver’s journey from village to city. Teacher‑author Henryk Czarnecki adapted the essay for his book “Profesor na drodze,” which filmmaker Zbigniew Chmielewski later turned into a movie and, three years on, into the TV series. The main characters – Leszek, Ania and Bronka – were loosely based on real people, notably Leszek Górecki, whose true identity was Lechosław Uciński, a mechanic from the village of Brzezie who later worked in Silesia and served in the army. Viewers quickly identified with the characters’ struggles and aspirations, cementing the series as a cultural touchstone that continues to resonate across generations in Poland.
