Polish vets urge protection of livestock and pets amid heat wave

County veterinary offices in Ciechanów and Bochnia warned animal owners about the dangers posed by the forecast‑high temperatures and severe storms. They urged farmers and pet owners to ensure constant access to cool, fresh water, provide adequate ventilation and shade, and monitor animals for signs of overheating such as excessive salivation, laboured breathing, vomiting or loss of coordination.

The advisories also highlighted risks from sudden thunderstorms, recommending that animals be sheltered indoors away from trees, metal structures and power lines, and that transport be limited to night or early‑morning hours. In cases of suspected heat‑related illness, owners were instructed to cool the animal with wet cloths and seek veterinary assistance promptly. The officials cited legal obligations under bio‑security and animal‑welfare regulations and provided links to detailed guidance.

Mariusz Dobosz, the County Veterinary Officer in Ciechanów, emphasized the need for proper storage of deceased animals in refrigerated containers until collection, and directed owners to the national veterinary inspectorate’s list of approved transport and processing entities.
