Russian missile and drone strike kills 17 in Kyiv

On the night of 5‑6 August 2026 Russian forces launched a massive attack on Kyiv, firing 24 ballistic missiles, four anti‑ship missiles and 115 drones. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 98 of the drones but failed to shoot down any of the missiles, leaving the city exposed.

The strike killed at least 17 civilians and injured about 44‑55 others. The main targets were civilian storage facilities, a brewery, construction‑material warehouses and a railway station, which the Russian Defence Ministry said were transport, logistics and distribution centres.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed the lack of anti‑ballistic missile systems for the high casualty toll and urged Western partners to accelerate deliveries of such weapons.
