Poland wedding costs surge as guests' envelope gifts hit tax limits
Poland's wedding season peaks in the summer months, with 135,400 marriages recorded in 2024 – a 7.2% decline from the previous year but still concentrating most ceremonies in May through September. The high demand for venues, bands, photographers and catering pushes the price of a typical wedding into the tens of thousands of zlotys.
A Rankomat survey reveals that the majority of wedding guests now place between 700 PLN and 1,000 PLN in their envelopes, while smaller amounts of 401‑500 PLN and 501‑700 PLN follow. More than half of respondents say they would either scale down the event or postpone it to avoid taking on debt. Under Polish tax law, such envelope gifts are treated as donations and are subject to inheritance‑gift tax thresholds; however, tax offices report only a handful of checks during the wedding season, indicating limited enforcement.
The data shows a shift in Polish wedding culture: couples are increasingly weighing financial security over lavish celebrations, with 28% preferring smaller events and 26% opting to delay until savings grow.
