China pushes yuan as global alternative to the US dollar

China is intensifying a campaign to promote the renminbi (yuan) as a worldwide reserve and transaction currency. The strategy seeks to reduce reliance on the US dollar and mitigate exposure to American sanctions and the SWIFT messaging system, which have already affected Russia. The People's Bank of China plans to create an international digital‑yuan operating centre in Shanghai and is considering launching yuan‑denominated futures contracts to compete with existing products in Singapore and Chicago. Chinese officials are encouraging trade partners, including countries in the Middle East and Russia, to settle transactions in yuan, especially in oil trade, as part of a broader effort to embed the currency deeper into global financial flows.

If successful, the move would offer an alternative to the dollar‑dominant system without attempting to establish a monopoly, aiming instead at greater resilience for China’s economy and its trading partners.
