Polish zoos report animal deaths and welfare concerns

The Warsaw Zoo has announced the sudden death of Uganda, a prominent female rock hyrax that led her colony. Known affectionately by keepers as ‘Gryzelda’ due to a protruding front tooth, she was described as a bold and charismatic member of the zoo.

In a separate development regarding animal welfare in Poland, staff have returned to Zoo Łączna near Mieroszów following interventions by police and prosecutors. While approximately 30 employees have resumed duties to care for the remaining animals, concerns have been raised regarding access to clean water and appropriate food. Reports indicate that one bird has died, though the specific species and cause of death remain unconfirmed by veterinary results. The fate of 33 animals previously transported abroad remains uncertain.
