Polish ZUS clarifies sanatorium costs and outlines 800 plus benefit recovery rules

The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) explains that sanatorium treatment financed by the National Health Fund (NFZ) is not free; patients must pay a daily contribution that varies by room type and season. A single room with bathroom costs 40.90 zł per day in the high season (May‑September) and 32.60 zł in the low season (October‑April), while multi‑person rooms cost 11.90 zł and 10.60 zł respectively. Waiting times for a sanatorium stay range from four to eleven months, but can be shortened to about two weeks if a referral is returned by another patient (“zwroty”). A separate ZUS‑funded rehabilitation program is available for employed persons at risk of losing work capacity; ZUS covers travel costs and the patient does not pay for accommodation.

ZUS also details the conditions under which the 800 plus child benefit may be reclaimed. The benefit, paid to parents or legal guardians for children up to age 18, can be withdrawn if it was obtained on the basis of false statements, fraudulent documents, or paid to an ineligible recipient. A landmark ruling by a regional administrative court in May 2025 first revoked or altered a recipient’s right to 800 plus, establishing a precedent for future recoveries. ZUS may demand repayment in such cases.
