Polish ZUS introduces new pensioner ID cards and eases benefit application rules

Effective 13 July 2026, Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will begin issuing a new plastic ID‑card for pensioners and disability beneficiaries. The card, sized to international ID‑1 standards, includes holographic and micro‑print security features and will replace the previous paper‑based form. Existing cards remain valid through 12 July, and holders do not need to request a replacement unless the card is lost, damaged, or otherwise requires re‑issuance.

On the same date, ZUS also simplified the procedure for filing social‑security benefit applications. Claimants can now submit requests electronically through ZUS’s e‑platform or via employer‑run systems, with electronic documents treated as legally equivalent to paper filings. The new rules differentiate responsibilities between ZUS and the employer‑payer, setting a seven‑day deadline for employers to forward necessary documents to ZUS when the latter is the payer.

Both measures aim to modernise administrative processes, reduce paperwork, and improve security without altering beneficiaries’ rights or entitlement levels.
