Polistena: Forza Italia candidate receives electoral threats

Omar Spanò, a Forza Italia representative and candidate for the upcoming municipal elections in Polistena with the “Polistena Futura” movement, has been targeted by a series of intimidating threats. A letter containing insults and heavy threats was delivered to him, demanding that he withdraw from the electoral competition and public life. The threatening package was reportedly mailed from Turin on September 7 and arrived on October 5.

Spanò has filed a formal complaint with the Polistena Police Commissionerate, and investigators have opened a file to identify the perpetrators and any potential instigators. Despite the incident, Spanò stated that the gesture would not deter him and that he intends to continue his democratic campaign.

Social activist Cesare Laruffa has expressed solidarity with Spanò, calling for a return to respectful political discourse. Laruffa highlighted Polistena’s history of resisting organized crime, referencing former mayors Mommo Tripodi and Giovanni Laruffa, who both faced significant personal risks and police protection due to their anti-mafia stances.
